A Day Trip from a Road Trip

After our "timeout" in

San Antonio

, we hit the road again, knowing the towns we wanted to visit next, but not really having much of a plan. (Yes, I'm learning that even wanderers need some sort of plan to get the most out of the journey.)

Our original plan included San Marcos and then Austin, but because of weather, we'd decided not to go to Waco.

We arrived in San Marcos on Saturday and quickly discovered that our purpose for going there would not be open again until Monday. That threw a kink into my plans, and upset Tim more than it should have, so I made a hasty decision to take a day trip from our road trip and go to Waco, just for the day.

Honestly, it was poor planning on my part. But it seemed like a good distraction and we knew the coldest weather would avoid Waco for only 24 more hours, so it was either go now or not at all.

Going to Waco from San Marcos, we bypassed Austin, and planned to stop there on the way back to San Marcos, so we just drove straight to Magnolia Market.

Since this was a side trip, we stayed on the interstate the entire way, and from town to town, interstate drives look pretty much like interstate drives everywhere else - all the regular chains and stops.

This drive offered a fun stop, though - a Bass Pro Shop that seemed out in the middle of nowhere. Fact about me: I could move into a Bass Pro Shop and be right at home. Apparently, so could Tim. He wondered if they might offer him a job as mannequin.

Another reason going to Waco on the spur of the moment - it was Saturday, and Magnolia Market was a madhouse! People swarming everywhere. Lined up around the block to get into the bakery - we didn't even try to go there.

Thankfully, the Lord blessed us with a parking spot right at the back entrance - we pulled up just as someone was leaving, and didn't even have to circle around once, so that made it much easier on Tim.

We walked through the store, Tim got to hold Chip's hammer (I still don't know what that was about - not sure if it was one for sale or a display - but he held it!) I was busy looking at wall art.

We went back outside to the picnic table area so Tim could rest a bit. As I looked around at the families and all the happiness there, I realized how much God had redeemed the atrocities of the 90s in the town, and had created such a beautiful witness to the whole world through Joanna and Chip Gaines, their family, their work, their business. May God continue to use them in such powerful ways, and may He protect them from the evils of this world.

This wall art really resonated with me on this particular day. I pray I see everything as a miracle, because indeed, it is.

I didn't research Waco before we went, so we missed the

Texas Rangers Hall of Fame and Museum

- but it's at the top of our list for next trip.

Next up, Austin!
